New Air Route To Myanmar To Be Launched
Thai AirAsia will be the first low-cost
operator to fly to Mandalay, the second-largest city of
Burma as the carrier is going to launch a second route to
Myanmar from Don Mueang, Bangkok this autumn 2012.
Leading low-cost airline carrier Thai AirAsia will commence
services to Mandalay from Bangkok on October 4, 2012.
Mandalay is the economic hub of Upper Burma and considered
the royal centre of Burmese culture. There are currently
limited international air connections to Mandalay
International Airport. China Eastern Airlines has provided a
link to the Chinese city of Kunming since March 2003 and
added non-stop services to Mangshi in April last year. In
the mid-2000s there were also regular flights to Chiang Mai
and Chiang Rai, while the now closed Phuket Air provided
links to Bangkok.
Thai AirAsia has entered the Myanmar market since August
2006 when it inaugurated flights between Bangkok and Yangon.
The budget carrier believes its network expansion in the
Southeast Asian country will help it develop a leadership
position ahead of the launch of the Asean Economic Community
in 2015. The Bangkok - Mandalay service will be operated
four times weekly - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday,
meanwhile the current service to Yangon will also be
increased to three times per day. The airline is also
interested in expanding its services to Bagan and Nay Pyi
Taw if their respective airports will be improved.
There is a growing interest in the Myanmar market from
foreign airlines due to the growing business and leisure
links that are developing with the country. Therefore, the
new air route will gain benefit not only for tourists from
Thailand but also for those from other countries who visit
Thailand and may be interested in visiting Myanmar for an
extended vacation. In preparation for the launch of the
direct service, Thai AirAsia offered a promotional one-way
fare of US$ 49 between Bangkok and Mandalay and US$ 42 for
its Bangkok-Yangon route. Please check out
