Water Festival to be in November 9th 2011, Cambodia

The traditional Water Festival 2011 will be officially held
on 9th November in Phnom Penh to honor the strength of the
powerful Khmer marine forces in the ancient Khmer Empire and
to represent a large network of water transport.

Water Festival an annual activity is the most spectacular
traditional event that is similar with festivals held in the
north of Europe today. Until now there are lots of variants
about history of Water Festival. Among them, there are three
most popular stories. The first is that Water Festival is
for commemorating Preah Bath Jayayarman VII who brings
Cambodia peace and prosperity. One another is that boat
races are such good opportunities to show military prowess
of King Tranh (Regional King) Empire. And the other is that
water festival is a thanksgiving to the Gods of Water and
Earth for providing the livelihood and welfare for the
Cambodian people.
Celebrate festival
The annual Water Festival is called Bonn Om Teuk in Khmer.
In rainy day on the full moon day of November, three day
water festival was annually held in front of the Royal
Palace and boats racings are always performed along the Sap
River in Phnom Penh Capital, Cambodia. In that day, there
are hundreds of brightly colored boats with over 50 paddler
battle on the Sap River. Also in the evening brightly
decorated boats sail along the river and spectator can enjoy
wonderful fireworks displays.
